Dr. Qishan Shi

Dr. Qishan Shi is an internationally accomplished pianist and educator whose work reflects exceptional artistry and a deep commitment to student growth. Recognized for her expressive musicianship, refined technique and versatility across solo, chamber, and collaborative performance, Dr. Shi brings a world-class musical background to her teaching at the Centre for Musical Minds.
Her performance career has taken her across the United States and abroad, with featured appearances as a soloist with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, the University of Oklahoma Symphony Orchestra, the Azusa Pacific University Symphony Orchestra and the Orquestra Sinfônica Heliópolis in São Paulo, Brazil. She has also earned recognition in numerous national and international competitions, including the MTNA Young Artist Competition, the University of Oklahoma Concerto Competition, The American Prize, the Los Angeles Liszt International Piano Competition and the MTNA/OMTA Collegiate Competition.
As an educator, Dr. Shi is passionate about helping students become confident, expressive, and technically secure musicians. She has taught university-level group piano and applied piano, served as a Piano Graduate Assistant at the University of Oklahoma, and held a Piano Teaching Fellow position at the University of North Texas. Her teaching combines high-level professional training with a warm, individualized approach, allowing students of varying ages and levels to develop healthy technique, musical imagination, discipline and most importantly, joy, at the piano.
Dr. Shi is also a dedicated scholar and advocate for intercultural repertoire, with research focused on the intersection of Chinese and Western musical traditions in contemporary piano literature. Her doctoral dissertation explores intercultural elements in two-piano works by Chinese female composers Chen Yi, Alice Ping Yee Ho, and Fang Man, reflecting her commitment to broadening students’ understanding of music as both an artistic and cultural language.
Dr. Shi holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma, a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from Azusa Pacific University. With her international performance experience, advanced pedagogical training, and inspiring student-centered teaching style, Dr. Shi offers students an extraordinary opportunity to study with a pianist of remarkable depth, artistry, and expertise.
