Gabriel DeHoyos (b. 1981) is a native of Houston, TX. He began his guitar studies at the age of fourteen with jazz virtuoso Mike Wheeler and in 1998 he won a prestigious Down Beat award. DeHoyos passion for music lead him to study guitar at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music though in 2001, at the suggestion of his teacher Mike Wheeler, Gabriel transferred to the University of North Texas. Here he was free to focus on classical guitar repertoire and majored in Guitar Performance under Thomas Johnson. DeHoyos studied several years privately with Mitchell Weverka, where he developed his highly sought-after pedagogical approach to teaching guitar. Through merit, Gabriel was awarded the opportunity to perform in master classes for such international artist as Matteo Mela, Dimitri Illarionov, and Lorenzo Micheli.
Gabriel lives in Dallas Texas and is a dual masters candidate in Classical Guitar Performance and Music Education at Southern Methodist University where he has been awarded various academic and performance scholarships. Currently DeHoyos is graduate teaching assistant at SMU and studies with master musician and pedagogue Robert Guthrie. Gabriel plays a 2006 Spruce Cedar Double top guitar by Thomas Fredholm.
